One of the most common complaints about Active Directory self service password reset is how hard it is to get users to enroll. They just don’t want to be bothered. Why would you when it’s so easy to call the helpdesk?
In fact, when we first released Password Center, we soon found that most of our prospects already owned password reset solutions as shelfware, gathering dust because they couldn’t get users to buy into it and enroll. Our first thought was to build a good “bug them via email notification feature”…allow admins to send notifications to encourage enrollment. Pshaw, that’s what Outlook rules are for, to ignore those kinds of emails.
So we took it a step further and built a logon script. This script simply checks to see if the user is enrolled in Password Center when they are logging in. If they are, fine, go about your business conscientious user. If not, take them to the Password Center enrollment screen and don’t let them doing anything else until they enroll.
Of course, it’s possible to circumvent this and still log on (keep in mind this is done AFTER windows authentication) but we’ve made it so that it takes almost as many key strokes as just enrolling in the password reset service.
We know that not all customers use logon scripts and there are probably some crazy esoteric environments where it won’t work. But it’s a script, we’ll give it to you and let you modify it. One customer made the excellent point that only about half of his users meet the requirements to deploy the script, but heck, he now knows that those users will be enrolled.
Take a look at our AD self service password reset solution, GroupID Password Center, and ask your rep for a copy of the logon script and see if it can get your users enrolled and leaving your help desk alone!
