Imanami works with a number of large healthcare organizations, and so I try to stay fairly current on the technologies that are being most talked about.
Right now Single Sign On (SSO) is a huge topic of discussion. So much so that I asked one of my friends who is an ER physician at a large, urban teaching hospital about it. My fried assured me he only had to remember one password. It is on his iPhone and protects the other 20+ passwords he had to remember.
I was stunned on multiple levels.
One thing that I realized as I started digging in to SSO and how it works is that in most implementations Active Directory is key. Organizations are already using Active Directory as both a means of authentication as well as resource allocation. Naturally you wouldn’t want to throw that out.
But there are still a TON of organizations who are doing Active Directory provisioning manually or haphazardly.
If your information isn’t put into Active Directory quickly and correctly that SSO solution that you just spent a chunk of your budget on isn’t going to do what you need it to.
And even more importantly, if a user’s access rights aren’t changed when they move in an organization or are terminated when they leave the organization then you are still exposed to many of the risks that SSO is designed to protect you from!
Last week I spoke with a large, well respected hospital system that was extremely concerned because they just realized that when employees transferred between facilities or departments they still often retained their previous access rights, sometimes months before changes were made in Active Directory.
By automating HR to AD updates you eliminate almost all of those problems and maximize your investment in a Single Sign On product.
